Dyno Results

Thanks to Ahmed, we finally found an AWD dyno in the Midwest! DynaTech, in North Riverside just outside of Chicago, hosted a dyno session for 3Si on 1/27/2002. Ahmed had planned this for quite a while and put together what turned out to be a great weekend. We had some Michigan members and a bunch of people from Chicago show up at the Dyno. We had a total of 10 people make dyno runs. We had a variety of modification levels present.

Everyone made several 3rd gear pulls to calculate HP and have an opportunity to tune boost, timing, fuel, etc. on each run. DynaTech had the garage doors open and the ambient temp was about 60° in the garage. They provided 3 fans approx. 24" in diameter at the front of the car and we had the hoods propped up. This was not as much airflow as actually driving but we also don't drive with the hoods up either. The machine used at DynaTech is a Mustang Dynamometer which is supposedly conservative in its measurements. The measurement for HP is "to the wheels" power. The measurement for torque is to the wheels and not the same as engine torque. The "to the wheels" torque has been multiplied by the ratio in the transaxle in 3rd gear and the rear differential (about 3.5). Horsepower readings are also at the wheels but are unaffected by gearing.

More information about the details of these readings can be found at http://www.3si.org/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=56991&perpage=15&pagenumber=4. My results are posted below:

The following runs were made with normal low-RPM shifting to 2nd and into 3rd. While in third, the run was from about 2500rpm to 7000rpm (redline). Click on each image for a larger picture.

Horsepower: 375.7 @ the wheels

Name: Rob Schoen
Model: 1991 Stealth RT/TT
Approx. Flywheel HP: 400hp
Settings: Boost @ 12psi, S-AFC @ -25
Modifications:
  • K&N FIPK
  • Custom cat-back exhaust
  • Test pipe
  • Ported and polished heads
  • Triple-cut valve job
  • HKS EVC4 @ 12 psi
  • Greddy Type-S BOV
  • Unorthodox underdrive pulley
  • DSM 460cc injectors
  • Apexi S-AFC
  • Hi-flow upgraded talon fuel pump
  • Upgraded Y-pipe
  • No precats
  • No main cat
Comments: Rob was having problems tuning his S-AFC. He suspects that the Talon fuel pump he's using is what caused the problems. Rob's car weighed 4080 with him (180lbs) in it; he also had Joe G. in there as well (about another 180 lbs). Rob made runs at 12psi, 15psi, and 17psi; his best pull was at 12psi - 257hp. Rob saw 1700F from his front EGT gauge at 12 psi, 1800F at 15psi, and 1850-1900F at 17psi He dyno'd last year at AAM before the 460cc's and S-AFC at 17psi and made 300hp and 364ft/lbs.

Horsepower: 257.3 @ the wheels

Name: Joe Gonsowki
Model: 1996 Stealth RT/TT
Approx. Flywheel HP: 320hp
Modifications:
    None - Bone Stock
Comments: Joe's first run was a 3rd gear pull with a top HP reading of 238 to the wheels. His second run was a 1/4 mi. run that made him almost jump off the dyno because the strapping was not secure. His rear tow hooks were bent from the jumping.

Horsepower: 238 @ the wheels

Name: Jack Tertadian
Model: 1994 3000GT VR4
Approx. Flywheel HP: ???hp
Modifications:
  • 17G turbos
  • Custom exhaust
  • ARCII with 87mm MAS
  • EVC EZ
  • Extrude honed heads/intake
  • JE pistons, Total Seal rings (poor seal, 6-26% leakdown)
  • FMIC, moderate sized
  • RC 720cc injectors
  • Twin Walbro pumps
  • Regrind cams (nothing but problems so far)
Comments: Jack's best dyno run was at 20psi in 3rd gear.

Horsepower: 425 @ the wheels!
